Giving Myself the Gift of Time

The wonderful thing about New Year’s Day is the sense of new beginnings.

I always have this overwhelming sense of possibility…

A deep and sincere feeling that I can change things for the better in my life.

I usually make a list of goals and projects, measuring them in my calendar.

Keeping track of how I’m doing on this project or that event.

This New Years day is no different.

Except I am going to try to undo my life a little.

Soak in more days on the beach and sip hot tea on Park Avenue with friends more often…

And read more.

OK, maybe I’ll limit myself to just one list, a list of good books.

My big goal: giving myself the gift of time.

Time for my family, time to read or watch an old movie.

Time to grow tomato plants.

Time to be healthier….

That means taking time to have fresh healthy food.

Taking more long walks.

Undoing life is as hard as doing it.

It’s almost easier to pack one’s life full of endless tasks, letting each day blur together.

It takes purpose and thought to give yourself a simpler life.

Oh there I go again, making a plan to not plan so much.

Word of the Year

This is one of my favorite weeks of the year.

No one is working their usual schedule…

The hub bub of Christmas is over and now we can just enjoy the days.

The lights and glitter of the season are still there to mesmerize us.

But there are no real deadlines.

We spend this week at the beach.

The sea is always a good idea, but the week after Christmas has a special draw to it.

It’s the perfect place to reflect and plan.

I know it is a bit early to think of resolutions, but I can’t resist.

 I only have two.

One is a secret and the other is to exercise more.

In our family we have a long tradition that I love:

It is called “the word of the year”

Each of us must come to New Year’s Day with a word that they want to live their life by in the new year.

We keep the list posted by the coffee pot, where we can look at it and remind ourselves of our goal.

The words from past years are as interesting and unique as the ones we choose now.

To us it’s a small piece of history.

My husband has had words like “gold” when he was going to the Olympics.

“Hope” was my daughters’ as she tried to have a baby…

Now the proud mother of three.

My word this year?

 “Notable”

I want this year to count.

I want to spend each day with intention and thought, never letting a moment pass me by unnoticed.

 I want a notable life.

A year that will have purpose.

Bodacious, celebrated and illustrious.

NOTABLE.

Christmas Eve Mornings

I woke early today to have a few quiet moments before the holiday chaos gets into full swing.

The gifts are all wrapped, ready to be packed into the car.

The cookies are decorated and tightly tucked into a pretty tin.

I pour a dark cup of coffee and wrap my feet in a soft blanket.

I think of how blessed I am to live is such a safe beautiful house.

How thankful I am for our family and the goodness of health.

We will worship at a church of our choosing and I think of all those in the world who cannot do that.

Tomorrow we will wake up to the gift of beautiful eager grandchildren.

We will cook together and eat our favorite foods.

How could we want for anything more in our lives?

I hear our puppy and my husband waking.

The store will be busy today.

We always have lots of husbands shopping for last minute gifts on Christmas Eve.

I have a list of what needs to happen before we can leave tonight…

I snap into reality,

it’s not even 6 yet and I already have an inbox full to deal with.

My husband starts correcting our naughty puppy…

and with that, the quiet moment is gone.

But it was just enough.

Blessed Christmas to you all!

A Day To Remember

unnamed

There are few days in your life that are “high” days…

Days when the world stops and the joy of that day sears into your soul.

Seeing Emmaline make her grand entrance into this world was one of those days.

She is my third grandchild, a tiny pink perfect little gem… Reminding me what a gift a new baby is.

Her big sister and brother are mesmerized by her presence in their lives.

It seemed as if the whole world stopped for just a moment to celebrate.

I have returned to work. Life is back to its wonderful routine, and baby Emmaline will now take her place in our family.
